Something's wierd there.  I'm on a Celeron 533 with only 192 MB RAM and
with KDE, Evolution and Mozilla running my OpenOffice.org1.1 starts in
about 10 seconds total (counting "1000 one, 1000 two"....)

I'm using Mandrake 9.1.  No funny optimizations either.
