SO refusing to start

I get 15 seconds until the progress box shows, and then an additional 20
seconds until the editor is up. This when running KDE and Evolution at
the same time on:

	1.4 GHz P4 with 256 MB RAM and oddles of swap.

The start a second time takes 15 seconds.

Oddly, all my windows seems to be slow to start lately. It is not a DNS
thing (as I can see) as I can resolve an address immediately. I suspect
too little RAM. But the slowness did not come about after any obvious
upgrade. This is on an up-to-date Gentoo system. No funny optimizations.
My wife is starting to make snide remarks...
