Alternative to Gimp?

i would be delighted to find a standalone image editor that has the 
capabilities and ease of use (first time that phrase has ever been used 
in connection with it, but compared to gimp it's a slam dunk) of the 
graphics app in staroffice 5.2. so far, haven't found one. i'm about to 
reload applix, so ridiculous is the gimp. still not very good, but what 
it offers is readily available and does not require one to have 
memorized the entire frigging spectrum in hex.
