cups printing slow - page by page

I ran this question by the gentoo list a few weeks ago, but no response, so I'm trying again here on the off chance that one of you can shed some light on the problem.

I've seen the same behavior with cups a number of times on different
distros, but I've never been able to suss out the answer. When a file
consists of multiple pages, cups often prints them as though each page were a file by itself - long pause between pages. On other distros (SUSE 9.0, for example), the transition from one page to the next is at top speed.

Currently on my system:

cups-1.1.20
foomatic-db-20031018
foomatic-filters-3.0.0.20031018
foomatic-3.0.0.20031018
foomatic-db-engine-3.0.0.20031018
ghostscript-7.07.1-r1

I am using a Laserjet 1000 which is nearly always defined as an ljet4 even on distributions that have the 1100 as a selectable item.

Does anyone have a clue what causes this behavior?

The only hint I have is that the behavior seems to occur mostly when printing from a browser or OpenOffice where the generated print is most likely postscript.
