There is absolutely no need to upgrade the kernel in steps. Check the archives of this list for various pointers. There is information at the kernel site and at the following url about the requirements.

You need to be a a certain level of mod-utils or above, and you need to be at XFree86 4.1.0 or higher. This may, in turn, require other upgrades.
Note in particular that if you use 'make oldconfig' to rework your existing kernel config, several important items may be dropped by default. See the above listed document for instructions.
