Detachable keypad and mini flat panel display

Has anyone seen a keypad with at least 8 keys that has the ability to
provide minimal feedback as to the state of each key? An on/off led, or
something similar. We currently manufacture our own that works on a serial
bus of our own design. We want to drop it like the plague. But off-the-shelf
offerings have been hard to find. Any pointers? It is used in a measurement
system where an individual not near the display needs to provide subjective
information. They need feedback as to the state of the information they are
providing. They typically do not have access to the computer display. Of
course, we would be happy if it worked with Linux.
