I'm very casual and I like GIMP...but then I want to be a developer

How 'bout use the magic wand selection tool on the white, then
- right-click > select > invert
- right-click > edit > copy
- file > new > (adjust settings if required) OK

Then on the new file
- right-click > edit > paste
