I know what you mean I had to compile gphoto2 from CVS to get my RICOH Caplio G3 to work.

I have been becoming more and more reluctant to boot to XP on my /dev/hdb1. I tend to spend a lot longer learning how to do things in Linux then doing them but that's the fun.

Now that things just 'work' in linux XP is only used on a rare ocassion.
