The list outage was caused by my ISP having to route my entire neighborhood
through a new head-end router. They were upgrading our services (more
bandwidth!) and need to cut everyone over which caused us to get a completely
different IP address.
I'm currently working w/ David Bandel to move the SxS mail host to a static IP
machine that he has offered to host for us. Expect the mail to slowly be
cut-over to him over the next few weeks. This should cut down on list outages
greatly! (unless panama drops off the net <g>)
Once the mail transition takes place, the only service that remains to be
moved elsewhere is the news groups. As such, I'm gonna ask here for a
volunteer to host our news server. There's only 2 stipulations:
1) you have to have a static IP
2) you can't already be hosting one of our other services
The news server is truly a set-it-and-forget-it operation. Any takers?
As for future directions.. well, let's kick it around shall we? We're almost
done with the site re-org/cleanup, and once we get all the services moved off
my crappy home connection, I plan to start advertising the site and list(s)
all over the place (slashdot, google, etc) . I don't think we need to be tied
to a distro. I just think we need to get our name(s) out there for the
upcoming influx of linux newbies... there's plenty of people trying Linux for
the first time on their desktop/laptop. And we've got the skills on this list
to fix whatever issues they run into. We've got enough bread (distros, fields
of interest, etc) that this list should be invaluable to the hordes of
newbies out there... I think we just need to make ourselves a 'presence'
