Directly from nvidia via a gentoo ebuild. Here's the only rub:

1. The kernel logs errors frequently from the nvidia modules (even before
2.6.0). nvidia doesn't totally understand how to code kernel modules, it seems.
The messages, however, are harmless - no lockups, etc.

2. nvidia has never bothered to learn how the via chipsets work (using either
kernel or nvidia agpgart support locks up my machine solid), so I can't use
agpgart on my pc, which negates some of the benefit of using the nvidia modules.
If you don't have a via chipset, you won't have this problem.

You can download the 4496-level modules directly from nvidia. The modules
(kernel and glx) are packaged together and installed together. Just be sure
your /usr/src/linux symlink is correct. Then you make the appropriate changes
to XF86Config and setup to use the nvidia glx modules (symlinks? - on gentoo,
you just execute 'glx-update', but I'm sure you can do the equivalent manually).
If you change the kernel source (not just recompiling a new kernel), you must
reinstall the nvidia stuff. Nvidia supplies a lengthy README file.

Enjoy,
