cp weirdness on /dev

Machine A is a caldera 2.4 box. I am sure it isn't using devfs. The puzzling
thing is that the file system I am trying to tranfer was created with cp
-au.

Have they changed cp?

cp (coreutils) 4.5.10 is the version with which I am trying to copy. 

cp (GNU fileutils) 4.0 was the version used to create these file.
