Well, in the purest historical context, Scottish women did not usually
wear kilts. It was pretty much exclusively male dress until the 20th
century when highland dancing was invented and largely adopted by young
girls and when the pleated skirt, including those of plaid, were
popularized as ladys' "country attire" during the post-Edwardian period
in Britain. If truth were known, there are for more kilts worn (by
either sex) outside of Scotland than within.
