Lexmark z53: lprng versus cups on server

Not sure which dialogue you're referring to but each machine can do it's 
own 'local filtering' which means that they can take advantage of the 
capabilities of the printer.  The connection to a server machine 
(assuming the printer is a local printer to that machine) would be done 
by an ipp connection (port 635?) so that cups client talks to cups 
server.

Machines running lprng would also be doing their local filtering and 
sending prints via port 515 I believe.  It's been awhile since I've done 
all this so I might be wrong on some aspects of it.

Good printer support is the advantage.

I used to be an lprng jock too but I have now switched all printing over 
to cups.  And it works nicely with some of the newer more feechur'd 
printer that do photo printing.  I tried to get one of those to work 
under lprng (HP5550) and never got very far with it.

A quick check (on SuSE 9.0) shows that the Z23 is supported by cups.
