ALSA weirdness with 2.6.0

Don't no about the way 2.6.0 handles it - is it possible to build the 
ALSA drivers into the kernel? Up to 2.4.x, they were of course only 
available as modules, and you had to put lines like
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
into modules.conf to get sblive working.
