StarOffice:Outlining

Speaking of linux word processors.

I don't seem to be able to get Staroffice to properly outline.
I have setup outlining in the tools menu. But, I don't know how to turn this
on.

If I just type:
I. Top heading
followed by a new line, I get:
I. Top heading
II. 
This is nice. However, if I tab this line over, I get:
I. Top heading
  1.
This is supposed to be a capital A.

Additional tabbing just gives more levels, all with Arabic numbers. It looks
like I am getting line numbering, not outlining.

Any suggestions appreciated.
