[WMSUG] Mailing List

I think there is something wrong with the grlug's email archives since it
says "520 messages" but only shows about 30 of them. I've shot a note to
one of the members to ascertain the group's viability.

If you are looking for a great Linux resource, including experts and
novices from all corners of the english-speaking world, check out
http://www.linux-sxs.org and the affiliated email list:
linux-users at linux-sxs.org
The web site is a "Step-by-Step" approach to Linux and is written by the
users of the email list from their own experience.
The email list is friendly and Linux-focused. All distributions are
welcome, although the main distros represented in force are Suse, RedHat,
Gentoo, and (formerly) Caldera. There are several LFS-ers
(Linux-From-Scratch) also.
The list was started a couple years ago when the "Great Caldera Email List
Diaspora" occurred, caused by Caldera OpenLinux users realizing that
Caldera did not have their interests in mind whatsoever. You may have
noticed that SCO (formerly Caldera) is continuing to prove them right. The
SxS site predates the list by several years.

It would be nice knowing all the LUGs out there. So far the only one I
can find on the web is the GR Linux Users Group (www.grlug.org). They
don't look real active to me. I know the Kalamazoo group meets once a
week on Thursday evenings, however most folks will not want to drive the
60 miles one way to get there. Suggestions for pointers to other groups
are welcome.

I don't necessarily think Sun is going down, per se, but I would
definitely
agree that they are on the near end of realizing that they just can't
charge what they've been charging and stay afloat.

There are already a few Linux Users' Groups in the area, although the
value
of the business personnel originally in this Sun group is something
special. Steve, if you would "bless" one, and point the SUG members in
the
same direction it would perhaps keep some of that value in the same
group
together. User Groups are tough enough to organize and maintain, and
I
commend you on your efforts. I handed off the Java Users Group late
last
year to someone better apt than myself, but I still remember the work
involved.
Check with Joel Adams if you are interested in LUGs, as Calvin's LUG
has
been one of the more notable ones I know of. Joel can probably point
you
at others in the area as well if desired.

Steve,

I can understand the lack of interest, I think Sun is setting. But
what
about a "what to do with sun" users group or a linux users group. Unix
is
still alive where could we go from here?

Since there doesn't seem to be anyone who wants to lead this group and
get things going regularly, I am going to shut down this list in the
near future. If this list is deemed usefull, let me know and if I get
enough demand, I will leave it up.
