no need to start any religous wars here. the whole
GNU/Linux thing is not that big a deal, and there are
reasons to watch licensing issues very closely, which
is what Debian does most religiously. just look at
what SCO is doing and you see why it can pay off to
watch this closely.

admittedly not the easiest installation. that
certainly goes to Lindows. if you want a good Debian
distribution that has the ease of installation of
Caldera or Mandrake, then look at Libranet. Or if you
only want a desktop installation, then Knoppix is very
easy as well. As you know, both Libranet and Knoppix
install genuine Debian on your system.

I'd agree that sometimes the defaults chosen for the
packages are not what I would choose. In those cases,
I don't use the Debian packages. Then I install from
source.

But that only happens when it is something that I am
working with so closely that I shouldn't have been
lazy to begin with and should have installed from
source anyway.

I have no idea how you would find the syntax
confusing. But I am sure that you do. I've never found
it difficult and have found the whole system to be so
incredibly easy that I've wondered for a while why
anyone would use anything else.

As David Bandel put it, Debian servers are a piece of
cake to maintain and update. My servers now always
have the latest security updates. There isn't a Linux
server that is more stable or secure.
