Tom, I'm using Knoppix from an HD install. It makes a
great desktop system and has all the stuff in it that
the Knoppix CD has.

A couple of gotcha's to watch out for. There aren't
really any partitioniing options. You get a swap
partition and a root partition. The latest version of
3.2 beta includes support for XFS, but every time I've
tried to use it, the installation has failed.

The ext3 format seems to work best. Sometimes choosing
the ReiserFS format has failed on me. That said, my
current desktop system is Knoppix on ReiserFS and it
works great.

The sound doesn't always install properly. It's in the
FAQ. Run /etc/init.d/alsa-autoconfig after the
installation is complete and that usually fixes
everything.

It is designed to set up two users, root and knoppix.
If you add other users you will also have to add their
permissions to the audio group for sound to work (and
there are other permissions you'll need to check as
well).

No matter what I do on an installation it always seems
to end up setting the German keyboard as the default.
You just have to go into the KDE control center and
change the default keyboard to fix that.

Make sure to run apt-get update and apt-get
dist-upgrade after the initial installation, before
you start reconfiguring anything.

When you are done you'll have a great desktop system
that is built on the superior debian package system.

(the only one that is equal to it, i'll add, is the
gentoo package system, but if you go that route you'll
have to spend the next two weeks setting up your
computer instead of the next 2 hours)
