Yet another convert.
You may have missed the article in the Wall Street Journal I believe
about IBM is beating the trend towards many small servers by pushing
linux on its "Big Iron" servers.
Interesting.

Today in the NY Times we find this.

MS has noticed linux.

Here is one quote from the article:

     The memo [Confidential internal memo at MS] on protecting
     sales of Windows and other desktop software mentioned
     Linux, a still small but emerging software competitor
     that is not owned by any specific company. "Under NO
     circumstances lose against Linux," Mr. Ayala wrote.

Read the article. Basically, MS has a slush fund for offering deep
discounts to customers who are thinking of linux.

I have always thought that the major beneficiary of linux would be MS
users, who would get a better product from MS because of the fear of
losing sales to linux.  I never thought of this angle, though. Competition
is good.
