I decided to give this one a try - big improvement over the last time (4.8).  

1. My NIC (tulip) detected out of the box.
2. X works OK with my NVIDIA MX400, but you have to pick Mouse choice 2, 
rather than PS2
3. You have to make a new kernel to get sound. but my SB16 is now working
4. KDE/Kmail/Konqueror are working OK.

So, I'll be experimenting over the next few weeks to see how much of my 
desktop needs this one can fill.
