KDE3.1.1a compiled and install now sound is root only

Permissions on /dev/mixer?
Also check for a configuration file under /etc somewhere. RedHat has one 
called /etc/security/console.perms

My guess is that this problem has more to do with your logging in as 
root and having permissions of /dev/mixer changed, rather than a kde 
upgrade problem.

You might be able to just change perms on /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp to 666 
and work around the issue, at least until your next reboot.
