gPhoto2 kernel problems

You don't need an upgraded kernel. My camera worked on a 2.4.10 kernel,
before I whacked up that machine. My camera works fine on my 2.4.19
totally modular kernel. Its magic, but with the hot swap agent enabled,
the right modules are loaded and things go fine.
There is nothing dangerous about insmod'ing modules. I do this sort of
thing frequently on one of my machines where modprobe just doesn't work.
Once or twice I insmod'ed things in the wrong order, but then, things
don't quite work but no harm done.
The output of cdrecord -scanbus suggests your camera is not being
detected, so likely a module problem (or hardware). What do you see with,
cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
It should show you your usb ports. This works on my 2.4.19 machine,
but not on my older machine. No idea why. Maybe because my older machine
stopped working with the camera.
If you get desperate to see it work, you can use Knoppix. Knoppix
automatically mounts my usb-storage camera when Knoppix boots up. Really
slick.
Now, you are using an usb-storage camera, aren't you?
