I have just installed WinWord 97 more or less successfully under Wine
(the installer complained about missing OCDB configuration), but Word
started and I was able to open an rtf file and to print. My setup:
- Redhat 9
- latest Wine 20030408 (compiled from source with the wineinstall script)
- Cups spooling system.

The wine installation is nearly as out of the box; I have only added a
single native Win98 dll to c:/windows/system (riched20.dll) to make
wordpad run. and I have only minimally tweaked the configuration file
~/.wine/config:
- path to Drive A, C, D etc.
- SCSI device setting for my cdrom
- font path to /usr/share/fonts/local/TrueType (guess who's in there)
(if you wish I can send you my config off list).

The secret of success in wine printing seems to be Cups. I have heard
nightmare stories about it, but I was quite impressed how the RH 9
installer configured Cups correctly to suit my printer (Deskjet 970C),
and I was even more impressed to see that wine recognized Cups and the
printer without any tweaking.
According to the wine devellopers, configuring wine to play with other
spooling systems (LPRng) seems to be very tedious, so you might give
Cups a try.
