Xandros, not Gentoo

I tested Xandros' last release candidate. For a beginner, Xandros is a painless way to get a Debian
installed. From my experience, and the reports of others, it does a good job of installing hardware.
Caveat: like its parent Corel Linux, Xandros has a proprietary file manager and user interface.
Some people like it. Having gotten used to KDE, I found both CLOS and Xandros user interface
to be more of an obstruction than an advantage. Also, since rewriting its file manager/interface to
accommodate upgrades to KDE, do not expect Xandros to keep up with the crowd. The Xandros version I
tested has the same "fooze" problem Joel Hammer mentioned in his recent post. I don't know if the final
release corrected his.
Also, if Cross Over Office is important, I'd suggest you get the less expensive version of Xandros and
order the latest version of CrossOver separately, so you get both the latest release and free updates.
I do not use CrossOver because it does nothing I can use - yet. (I have just installed WPO2KL, and so
far it seems to run reasonably well, both in Libranet and Caldera WS 3.1.1. There was apparently a later
release of WordPerfect Office 2000 that seems to have fixed many, maybe most, of the the bugs. I'll report
in detail later when I finish my testing.)
Final disclaimer: I do not like CLOS. The only benefit I got out of CLOS was WordPerfect 8.1, which I
use now on Libranet (with mouse scrolling.)
