Knoppix to the rescue!

I must say my biggest mistake was using software for taxes. After about
four years of it, I had forgotten all my hard learned knowledge of tax
law and was reduced to a lump just entering data into a machine.

Using a spreadsheet is much preferable. After you set that up, you will
understand better where your money goes!
