Kernel building help: what am I missing?

Well, I would try mounting the thang with something like:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda2 /windows
or some such.
Look for error messages, and fool around with other parameters, and see what
shows up. Maybe you can make mount be more verbose with -v
Maybe you are trying to mount a bad partition.
fdisk /dev/hda and look around.
