xfree86 failed to start properly

My fault. I forgot to reboot before installing xfree86 4.2. Now that the 
leftover settings from caldera's xfree was gone, everything crashed. 
Welcome to my reality. :)

1. which dev is the usb mouse using? the /dev/mouse softlink isn't 
pointing at the right mouse. so when I ran XFree86 -xf86config 
/root/XF86Config.new, the mouse wasn't movig.

/var/log/messages indicated the USB mouse was detected properly. But I 
coldn't find anything under /dev/usb.

2. are there special environment variables needed to run XFree86 
locally, other than DISPLAY=:0.0 ?
