Just guessing, but.....
This sounds like some modules aren't being installed for your sound card.
I would exit from kde, in fact, restart the computer, restart kde, and:
lsmod > default.modules
Then, I would start xmmm, and run mpg123 and make sure all it working.
Then,
lsmod > xmmm.modules
Then,
diff default.modules xmmm.modules
and look for what has changed.
It is no big deal to load modules with insmod. The only tricks are:
1. Know which modules to load.
2. Load them in the right order. The lower they are in the listing, the
earlier they have to be loaded.
BTW, I was never happy with my linux computer until I learned to handle
modules manually.
