I'd go with the carrier's recommendation. DSL sometimes gives trouble.
It is hard enough to get them to help even if they own every piece of
it. If you bought something other than their standard, that something
will always be the problem.

Other than than, make sure the modem you get has, as its interface, an
Ethernet RJ-45. Nothing else. This ensures no compatibility probs with
Linux and doesn't limit your options later.
