Kernel and gcc optimizations...

I've been tinkering again...
I have a ws311 box here with gcc 3.04 and I'm testing different compiler
optimization flags when compiling kernel source code. It's pretty much
what you'd expect, as you move from -O2 to -O3, the code runs faster but
get's much fatter. What I need is a definitive benchmark tool in reguards
to kernel testing. Can anyone suggest a good tool? Maybe share your
experiences?
I've been benchmarking my results by timing various tasks and well... I'm
getting down to splitting hairs. My blunt tool isn't up to par for what
I'm doing.
For the record, 2.4.18 compiles cleanly with gcc 3.0.4, resulting in a
kernel and modules package that resembles ws311 in funtionality.
