How to recover the first .config file

Perhaps $SRC/.config.old? Otherwise, some distributions put
a defconfig-mumble-mumble somewhere in the /usr/src/linux tree.
Failing that, look for a config file in /boot. It might not be
there, but distributions often do that, too.
