XDM Login Broken

True. However, for local hosts, this line in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers
controls local access:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X
NB: If you use XDM, you can add options after this line to customize
how X starts, for example:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi 100 -gamma 1.5

I stared at it for awhile, tried a few things, but nothing worked.
