Regarding #2, you could put something else in place of the * .
I am not sure of the exact format of this file, but something like:
127.0.0. Otheripnumbers
as the first line might be enuf to limit logons just to your local computer.
Regarding #3, what was in your Xaccess file that was preventing you from
logging in?
Regarding #1, I don't know nuthin' about configuring GUI's. Do you have
the same problem if you just start the xserver with startx or kde or
whatever without using xdm? If the problem goes away when you start the
xserver directly, then try printing out the man page for xdm and reading
it over and over again, like I did when I got into the kdm thing. (I really
think the CHOOSER option is cool!) There are tons of configuration items
there, most of which I don't have any idea about but they might relate
to the problem.
