What does autoconf --version say?
And how did you upgrade autoconf? I did the following..
1) Got the PLD Linux rpm autoconf-2.52-7.noarch.rpm from rpmfind.net
2) Got the gettext-0.10.39-3.i386.rpm from Caldera's 3.1.1 ftp site (I'm
basically running 3.1 not 3.1.1) and installed that.
3) rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force autoconf-2.52-7.noarch.rpm
