compiling kde

Have struck a problem in compiling both kde-2.2.2 and kde-3.0. Its in the 
make of kdelibs of both versions that it errors out with:

/usr/i386-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lpcre

I am stuffed at this point so any help would be appreciated.
