compiling kde3

As I cannot get rpms for kde 2.2.2 I was going to compile that but as 
kde3.0rc1 was available I made the jump. Have compile qt-3.0.2, managed arts
in kde3 but kdelibs is causing probs. Not that its the fault of the prog but 
it will not compile without libxml2.so, I have libxml2.so.2 and they are 
linked. However the compile still does no see the lib. Called ldconfig, the 
file is in /usr/lib downloaded and installed a new tarball but still no go.

What do I need to do ?
