I would strongly recommend looking at the OpenPKG.org portable packaging
system to anybody who has to maintain a heterogeneous mix of *nix systems.
I started using it a couple of years ago when moving from Caldera to SuSE,
and now use it on Linux, FreeBSD, and (ducking) even on SCO OpenServer.
One of its biggest advantages is that it's totally independent of the
underlying distribution's packaging system so local modifications don't
break things like on-line updates.  I wrote the overview below for a
presentation I made to the Seattle Unix Group:

Instead of giving money to found colleges to promote learning, why don't
they pass a constitutional amendment prohibiting anybody from learning
