I truly don't know what could be going wrong. Just to try, I ran my 
script exactly as posted (except changing 30k to 300k). Here's what I did:

$ ./wget.sh
{about 2 hours elapsed, then}
$ md5sum -c ProMEPIS-2005.b02.iso.md5sum
ProMEPIS-2005.b02.iso: OK
$

Perhaps you could post the exact steps you took.
