Hard to say without aditional evidence, but the most likely reason for
a kernel panic is that you forgot to compile your fs support (ext2/3,
xfs, reiserfs, etc.) as builtin rather than as module. If, for
example, your started on gentoo using genkernel, that procedure builds
everything as modules and requires an initrd.
