That was it!  I copied the bzImage to /boot and called it kernel-2.6.9 and 
pointed the grub.conf at it and now I have progressed to a kernel panic.  I 
will defer this until after the final on Tuesday.  I thought this would be 
quick and easy, being gentoo and all....
