Not sure what might have happened in your case. It just sounds like the 
install failed. I've installed it now on 4 different systems of varying ages 
and hardware mixtures. One of them a laptop. All have gone perfectly.

As an experiment, you might try entering "custom" at the boot prompt to get a 
minimal install. Then when it begins downloading everything from the net, it 
will add all the gnomish desktop stuff, or so I'm told.

I'm keeping a detailed set of notes of what it takes to get it up and running 
as a server. I might publish them at some later date.
