Hmm... Did you check hdparm to make sure your new drives are achieving
ATA100 (or better)?
I'm getting about 25 seconds start up times for KDE on my Compaq
Presario wih an AMD K6-III+ @ 500 mHz , 384 MB, and a Promise PCI ATA100
card running a WD 80 GB Jumbo. I did a trial install of FreeBSD 5.3 on
the same box (using an old Maxtor ATA100 20 GB drive) and KDE 3.3 starts
a bit faster than with Libranet 2.8.1.
