IMAP via SSH via dial-up?

I'm not much into encrypted mail, but most of the other benefits of
imap are provided for me conveniently by gmail. I can access my mail
from any supported browser, and I don't have to worry about
maintaining a slew of software products to do this myself. Google also
identifies about 98% of the spam that I receive, and it's easy to
whack the spam or unspam the mail if a mistake has been made.

$.02 in the old days, probably about a dime these days.
