Adding menu items in Gnome 2.6

Thanks. I tried that but everything is read-only in the applications. 
Tried it running as root and nautilus crashed and hung Gnome.

Where is this stuff actually stored. The docs say 
/usr/share/gnome/vfolders but making changes there had no effect.

Any help appreciated.
