THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FROM CITIZENS’ ALLIANCE FOR PROPERTY RIGHTS
July, 2007

How to Make Your Money Go a Lo-o-ong Way

How does a great salmon dinner sound? Would you like to eat that dinner and
hear Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna speak too? While you wear your
jeans, boots and string tie? Well then, here’s one for you.

The Eastside Republican’s Club is holding its annual Salmon Bake on August
7th to benefit candidates for office. Except this year, they have invited
CAPR to the benefit. For the cost of your tax-deductible contribution to
the CAPR Legal Fund at the door, you can do all of the above. Not only will
your donation to the Legal Fund help us fight the bad guys (and girls in the
state!), but the ERC will add an incremental donation to the fund also! You
can also donate to your favorite candidate if you like, and the candidate
will also get additional funds. If you know of a better deal than all this,
please don’t spread it around. Just tell the editor!

Dinner starts at 6:00 on Tuesday, August 7th with the program scheduled to
wrap up by 9:00. It will be held at the Bellevue Seniors Center located at
4063 148th Ave NE in Bellevue, just across from the Microsoft Campus. For a
map and more information, click here

With many CAPR supporters planning to be there, you’ll be in good company.
Come out and be part of a great night for Citizens’ Alliance!

Olympic Stewardship Foundation

A group of Jefferson Co. citizens has established the Olympic Stewardship
Foundation to promote wise, voluntary land-use practices. The practices
espoused by the foundation will be centered on real science applicable to
Jefferson Co. rather than the “one size fits all” version that is being
pushed across the state by environmental groups and some government
agencies.

Jefferson Co. is in the process of writing its Critical Areas Ordinance
update. There has been an active and vocal group of citizens involved
during this period, and the group has worked hard to try to put some common
sense regulations into their CAO. The group includes regular citizens,
scientists and others including long time CAPR supporter Norman MacLeod.
Rather than just accept the standard fare of stewardship practices, the
group decided to get out ahead and offer alternative practices that are
actually geared to Jefferson Co.

As reported in previous issues of this letter, that process has been
somewhat taken over by outside forces, in contradiction to the Growth
Management Act. The extreme Washington Environmental Council (WEC), a
private organization, has threatened to sue the county into submission if
the county does not follow its suggestions. Of late, the Washington
Department of Ecology (DOE) has also inserted itself into the process with
demands that the county must follow what it purports to be “best available
science”. Many feel that, at best, DOE’s science is questionable and “one
size fits all” and that it better suits urban environments than it does the
unique characteristics of Jefferson Co. Others are less charitable,
describing it as junk science.

The Foundation already has an extensive website at www.olysteward.org
<http://www.olysteward.org/> with many excellent documents relating to the
Jefferson CAO update. Again, the Alternate Best Available Science
<http://www.olysteward.org/REPORT_19_CAORC_Brooks_Supplemental_BAS_042607.pd
f> prepared by biologist Dr. Kenneth Brooks is illuminating, making the DOE
version look a bit like junk. Less entertaining, but illuminating
nonetheless, is the agreement
<http://www.olysteward.org/WEC%20Second%20Agreement.pdf> forced on
Jefferson Co. by WEC. The many documents on the site function as a small
library on rural land–use issues.

Memberships in the organization are $20 with information available on the
website. Show your support!

Primary Election Endorsements

The CAPR Board has endorsed Judy Fenton for Seattle City Council Position
#9. She is running against appointed incumbent, Sally Clark. Besides being
on the right side of property issues, Judy supports adequate funding for the
Seattle Police Dep’t. and wants to maintain the viaduct versus deleting it
in favor transit and cars clogging the surface streets. If you live in
Seattle and don’t relish the idea of riding your bike to your downtown
workplace in November, as promoted by Mr. Sims, Judy is your person. More
at www.judy-4-seattle.com <http://www.judy-4-seattle.com/> .

Any other endorsements made too late for this letter will be sent out prior
to the primary under separate heading.

Odds and Ends

CAPR NEWS will be on vacation in August. Barring big news, of course.
Enjoy the warm weather!

The next meeting of the King Co. chapter of CAPR will be held at 7:00 PM,
Thursday August 2nd. The meeting site is the IHOP restaurant located at
