It makes for a healthier organization to have wider interest and willingness to serve. I encourage you to run if you're interested.</div><div><br></div><div>Brief thoughts on your questions below. </div><div><br></div><div>1. Whistler is a trial, the idea being that it has some potential to grow over time into an annual destination regional -- a smaller version of Seaside (D20) or Penticton. I don't think anyone feels it could ever grow to the size of either of those, but it took years of cultivation for those to become what they are today. The current plan is to not run Whistler in 2018, as the popular Leavenworth regional will return next fall, but then to plan to run it in 2019-21. One of the possibilities is to shift Leavenworth to the spring if Whistler takes root in the fall, however this would entail compromise of the current spring rotation in SW BC. As is the case with U446, I believe it's a positive thing that D19 is willing to try new things -- I support that. However, there was a substantial lack of orderliness about how Whistler 2018 came about and was set up and this should be addressed -- the separation of only one week between Olympia and Whistler is but one aspect of this. Leavenworth was a big success the first time and should be in the plan for now. Olympia has been in decline and there's a proper question as to whether it belongs in any kind of rotation just to service the SW area of the district. Spokane, Kennewick and other infrequent regionals serve a limited area of the district and the key there is not so much an issue of burning sanctions or attendance cannibalization as it is to be financially sound with them. U430 (Vancouver) needs to sort out objectives and priorities for its area regional(s) -- with Vancouver/Burnaby in alternating years in the spring with Victoria and then Whistler in the fall (all in addition to Penticton) there is a valid concern D19 could become over-weighted with Canadian regionals, especially in years with sanctions enough for only four regionals. Overlaying this discussion is the matter of how many regional sanctions D19 will have in any given year going forward -- this number (4 or 5) is a function of the number of D19 members and attendance at the largest regional (Penticton) and is presently driven by the latter. For 2017 we were allotted 5 sanctions, this might not be the case every year. </div><div><br></div><div>2. Apart from participation in D19 policymaking, planning & execution, and focus on financial management; representing U446; and running successful Multi-Level Events (GNTs and NAPs take a lot of time); I plan to advocate for more accountability on the part of tournament chairs for communication and pre-coordination of their plans -- especially session schedules. I think the perspective of the clubs should be better considered, just as we've begun to address harmonization with clubs on our U446 board. While there is some good stuff going on in D19 -- Victoria back downtown this past April was a huge success, Penticton did well, and Leavenworth has the potential to be a star, the growing popularity of electronic entry purchases at regionals, and a sound financial condition at present, there is much to sort out, including strategies and plans for spring and fall regional lineups.
