2021 Bridge Update

Dear District and Unit Presidents,

Thank you for the time and effort you have spent to help sustain the game
of bridge in this past year. We couldn’t have done it without you.

With 2020 behind us and with more information on what 2021 will likely
bring, we have developed a tentative timeline for the return of
face-to-face bridge. Like you, we are hoping to do so with speed, but also
safety, in mind.

The email to all members about both the 2021 Summer NABC and in-person
bridge will have additional details (click here to read it

but there are a few things specifically for district and unit presidents we
would like to highlight.

*First, the 2021 Summer NABC is canceled.* Because the initially chosen
2022 Summer NABC site in Washington DC is closing, Providence will instead
host the 2022 Summer NABC. Thank you to both NABC committees and staff for
their hard work in getting this accomplished.

*Second, all Sectional and Regional tournament sanctions have been canceled
through the end of July. *This is part of a phased plan for the safe return
of face-to-face bridge.

Club operations are independent of the ACBL, and it is up to those clubs to
determine if and how they may reopen safely. However, circumstances for
Sectionals and Regionals vary quite a bit from that.

Availability of tournament directors and travel are key to these events,
and after review of the projected vaccine rollout, we do not feel these
needs can be safely met until later in the year.

As local and regional conditions improve, we expect Sectionals to begin to
return in August (this is subject to change). The ACBL is creating a team
to review each incoming request for a Sectional sanction in 2021. Whether a
sanction is granted and tournament directors are provided will depend on
local conditions and be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Because they typically involve travel of greater distances, we expect
Regionals to begin to return in early October after what we hope will be a
safe and successful period of Sectionals. The internal case-by-case review
of sanction cancellations will continue in conjunction with local sponsors
for these Regional tournaments. Please note these dates are subject to
change.

While planning your tournaments, you may want to review some of the
information and guidance available from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) and your local health department. Click here

gatherings.

*Finally, we plan to resume the NABC schedule in Fall 2021 with the Austin
NABC in November. *The dates for the 2021 Fall NABC are set as November
25-December 5.
