Unit Game Meeting and Recommendations

Scott, Ray and I met on Wed, June 10, to discuss the possibility of a Unit
sponsored game.

Before the meeting, I reached out to both Tracey Baer (who is on the board
of D21, and is their Social Media mistress, as well as an experienced
international player, who has a sense of what is going on across the
country and internationally re different events); and to Julie Smith (our
D19 rep to the National ACBL board). Both ladies stressed that Sectionals
are not allowed without a sanction from the ACBL, and that the best way to
go would be to have something along the lines of a Unit game, rather than a
“Sectional” or “Regional” or STaC. These will not be possible without the
blessing of the ACBL, and our district. So, we need to think differently.

Tracey spoke of some of the fun events she played in through the World
Bridge Federation’s women group, including a weeklong set of games: IMP
pairs, MP Pairs, Individual event and game against the robots. Julie spoke
of two different games: one, is a summer-long team event, to determine a
winner of an IMP league within Canada; the other, set up by Bruce McIntyre,
was a MUG using a sanction from the Vancouver Bridge Club—they had a 34
table game that gave out triple masterpoints (it ran during the special
silver point week last month).

And Ray told us about what Eric Stoltz is doing in Portland: a three-team
game twice a week, where each pair plays the others in a three-way match,
basically home-style Swiss. No points are awarded, and this event is
wildly popular, with a waiting list of good players in Seattle and
Portland/Northern California to play.

Ray, Scott and I hit upon this option for us: a twice a month on Friday
evenings home style team (Swiss) team game, where we place pairs into
teams, and they play each other. Ideally, there will be a natural break
within the pairings, so that this would be more bracketed than stratified.
8 players (or 4 pairs ) in each group…

We would not award points, but perhaps give out badges or have an imaginary
trophy for the pairs that do well…..

Anyway, Scott and Ray are probably more articulate about what we want to
do, but consider it bracketed home-stype swiss.

I think this would be fun, Nick liked the idea, but warned that summer
evenings are not the most popular time for bridge….

What do you all think?
