U446 Board Members,

The Kirkwood Trophy is awarded by District 19 each year to the member of District 19 who wins the most masterpoints in its open regionals. A plate engraved with the name and home town of each year's winner is added to the trophy. The trophy hardware is quite large and heavy, comprised of a multi-piece wooden base topped by a heavy, handled metallic cup that appears to have a silver-plate finish. Its condition is poor, with several cracks in the base. Repairing or re-building it would likely involve substantial investment. Such an investment would appear ill-advised as recent recipients have declined to take custody of the trophy. Throughout 2018 it sat in my garage and in 2019 it sits in storage at Eastside Bridge Center. The trophy hardware has thus become something of a “white elephant."

At the Victoria Regional this past April, we had JP Weber, D19 webmaster, take digital photos of the trophy to enable transition to a “digital” Kirkwood Trophy to ultimately be displayed on the D19 website. Meanwhile, we need to determine the disposition of the trophy hardware; I would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on this.

As well-intentioned as it might be to seek to donate the trophy to an entity where it could be displayed “in retirement," or to offer it for auction as a means of fund-raising, these avenues seem unlikely to produce a beneficial outcome. Some time ago I sent a note to a past winner asking his thoughts about the trophy hardware’s ultimate disposition, but never received a reply — perhaps an indication that physical possession hasn’t been and in the future wouldn’t necessarily be of particular importance to winners.

For the D19 board meeting at Pasco on October 20, I have included an agenda item on disposition of the Kirkwood Trophy hardware. If you have thoughts or suggestions on this, please send them to me prior to the Oct 20 board meeting.

My role in this stems from being D19 Multi-level Events (including GNT and NAP) Coordinator.

Thanks,
Tim
