Re: responding to the player, please do let her know that she can enter a
2-session event for a single session, but she is then not eligible for
overall awards, only the section awards (meaning, as Eric put it last
night, she could get an 80% game and be awarded ~1masterpoint at best). We
do not promote this on the flyers because players historically were
dissatisfied when they realized this kind of entry has limited eligibility.
(In one case, we had NLM players not understand that this meant they would
get lesser awards by using that option, and we ended up basically refunding
the entry via freeplays.) Single session entries for 2-session events are
not meant to be a feature...it's a remedy for rare situations where a
player requires it for some reason. (It will throw off the 2-session event
in competitiveness and structure if overused, too, which is another reason
not to promote it.)
But...on the bigger can of worms...
I'm attaching the doc I wrote up on this a few years back when I
investigated a shift to single session events for the board. It was
soundly rejected by the usual elite player concerns that motivate much of
our decision-making, including but not limited to rejection of a proposal
that we have the limited events offered as single session and just make the
open events be 2-session (because then the open players wouldn't benefit
from the B/C/D players in awards, as noted in the doc).
